Trust no one. Well, at least as it relates to their emails you receive. Truth is, anybody’s account can be infected at any time, and there’s no way to tell until it’s too late. Virus-laden emails and malicious links can be sent from the accounts of friends on social media, colleagues, vendors or suppliers. And never, EVER open attachments in emails from someone you don’t know. Cyber-criminals often send fake email messages that look very much like correspondence from a trusted source, for example:
- an invoice from an online store or business supplier
- a bank statement
- a notification from the police, the city courts or a tax collection agency
The goal is to trick us into opening the attachment or clicking on a malicious link and releasing the malware into our computer systems – also known as ‘phishing’. The following images are of emails recently sent to Kobargo’s CEO, emails that were immedately identified and deleted, but not before saving images of them to help us all be more cyber-aware.
Today’s cyber-criminals are smarter and more sophisticated than ever. In this video produced by our friends, the security experts at CISCO, a hacker shares her strategies in planning an attack. You’ll be shocked to learn how far in advance the threat starts.
